T.J. ha 13 anni. Con il padre Paul si è trasferito a vivere dalla nonna, nel tentativo di riprendersi dalla morte della madre, avvenuta due mesi prima in un incidente. La possibilità di riprendersi, per T.J., arriva nella forma più inaspettata e imprevedibile. Quella del giovane Hescher, un solitario metallaro sporco e malnutrito con l'hobby di dare fuoco alle cose e dalla sigaretta sempre accesa. T.J. rimane affascinato dal carisma e dall'anticonvenzionalità di Hesher, e sarà solo grazie alla sua carica anarchica ed eversiva che lui e suo padre riusciranno a impadronirsi nuovamente delle loro vite.
